A Charlotte man named Sam, also known as "the Jesus Saves guy" told WCNC Charlotte's Hunter Saenz that the protests have been an opportunity to show the world that Charlotte loves its community and stands up for its own. Ahead of the second night of protests, a State of Emergency had been declared in Charlotte. Eventually, flashbangs, tear gas, and pepper spray would be used to try and disperse crowds. The charges for all eight suspects included impeding traffic and failure to disperse.

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction said in a statement that two of its veteran officers, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, were killed. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that one of its deputy marshals, Thomas Weeks, was among those killed. The task force is made up of officers from multiple agencies. During the news briefing Saturday evening, CMPD said they were unaware beforehand that a protest had been planned nor were they in the loop about the event.

Around 9 p.m., hundreds of protesters stopped at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Headquarters in uptown. About 30 minutes later, a group stopped at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and shot off fireworks. People started throwing things at police line and CMPD launched tear gas before instructing people to leave immediately or be arrested.

One of those groups was those who supported the government of the tiny African nation of Eritrea. The other consisted of those who claimed the president of that nation was a brutal dictator. Monroe Road had to be shut down between McAlway Drive and Alliance Drive while police gave orders to disperse.

Kristen told WCNC that was the third one she'd heard tonight. First responders successfully remove the man from the steel grate. The severity of his injuries is not yet known at this time. WCNC Charlotte is committed to reporting on the many issues facing the communities we serve.

The two persons of interest are fully cooperating with the investigation and haven't been charged, he said. When officers approached a house to arrest the suspect, they were immediately met with gunfire and they returned fire, Jennings said. As the police approached the shooter, Chief Jennings told reporters, the officers were met with more gunfire from inside the home. After a long standoff, two women in the home were taken to a police station to be interviewed, the police later said in a statement. When they approached the residence, the suspect, later identified as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., fired at them with an AR-15-style rifle and a 40-caliber handgun from the second floor of a house, the police said. He was later pronounced dead in the front yard of the residence.

A white SUV pulled up and parked beside them, driven by a man later identified as Scott. The officers observed Scott rolling what they believed to be a marijuana "blunt", but they decided that the warrant operation had higher priority than the drug activity. Dozens of people, including at least 26 police officers, were injured during unrest surrounding an Eritrean cultural festival in the southwestern German city of Stuttgart in September 2023. A fight the same month between Eritrean government supporters and opponents in Tel Aviv led to violent street confrontations among African asylum-seekers and migrants. They remained mostly peaceful until sunset, when things turned more violent. CMPD says that rioters threw rocks and explosives at officers, damaged police property and community businesses.

Violence in our community is a community-wide issue that requires a community-wide response. We do have a number of programs in place to stop violence before it happens, but we must come together as a community to get at the heart of these matters. Just after 11 p.m., several arrests were made when protesters reportedly threw objects at police officers near the Omni Hotel and Epicentre. More than fifteen arrests were made during demonstrations that started Sunday night and went into Monday morning, including several involving weapon charges, according to police.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement, "The Justice Department is heartbroken by the deaths of three of our own law enforcement colleagues, and we extend our deepest condolences to their loved ones as they grieve this unfathomable loss." The fourth officer killed was Joshua Eyer, a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the department said Monday night. "Even though our officers were trying to take cover, they were at a disadvantage because the suspect was up at a higher level and they were trying to return fire from a lower position to an elevated position," the police chief said. The authorities shut down the city’s Shannon Park neighborhood, east of downtown, on Monday afternoon after gunfire erupted in order to more easily move victims to hospitals, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department wrote on social media.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says 30 people were arrested Saturday night as a result of "violent riots," six of them in possession of firearms. Officers said they were called to a business around noon because a group of people were blocking the entrance to it to try and prevent an event from happening. While the group of people putting on the event was eventually able to get in side, the protesting group remained outside for several hours. CMPD said some protesters threw things like sticks and bottles at officers as well.

The officer who arrested Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was fired and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. The three other officers involved in Floyd’s death were also fired, but no charges have been filed against them at this point. — Charlotte faced another tense night of protests with an increased threat to police and demonstrators. "These officers died as heroes and made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to our state," Ishee said. "We remember them, we honor their service, we send our deepest condolences to their families and friends, and we pray for healing for all affected by this tragic incident."

The suspect fled the home with a firearm and officers shot him in the front yard, where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as Terry Clark Hughes Jr, 39, who was wanted for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon as well as two counts of fleeing to elude. Late Saturday night, CMPD Chief Kerr Putney responded to the violence against his officers.
